## **G/T Mathematics Program**

Students collaborate on challenging problems.

The G/T Mathematics Program offers an enriched mathematics curriculum that is accelerated by at least two years. It replaces the general education mathematics curriculum and is taught daily by the G/T Resource Teacher. This curriculum prepares students for Pre-Algebra G/T in sixth grade. To participate in the 4/5 G/T Mathematics Program, students must be tested. Students are nominated for testing by teachers or parents and testing occurs during the month of February prior to the coming school year. Students new to HCPSS may be nominated and tested upon registration in the school. The tests used to determine eligibility are the School and College Ability Test (SCAT) or the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Additional indicators of outstanding performance in mathematics may also be considered when determining student placement.

We will continue to implement the Common Core Curriculum. The Common Core State Curriculum , CCSC, is based on a national curriculum that has been adopted by a majority of the states. This requires increased rigor and application of mathematical concepts in problem solving situations. Although we will not be using the former Howard County Unit Tests, we will use assessment measures for each unit of study. These will include tests, quizzes, projects, and math tasks.
